Teaching Philosophy

Mandy is known for her warm, structured, and supportive teaching style. Drawing from a diverse musical background, she tailors lessons to each student’s needs, focusing on strong foundational techniques through classical repertoire. The students in the studio benefit from a holistic learning approach that includes ensemble playing, music theory, sight-reading, and ear training, all of which are woven into each student’s development.

Mandy believes in setting incremental goals and practicing consistently. Her students are guided to develop not only technical skills but also musical curiosity and artistic expression. Clear instructions, organized practice plans, and personalized attention help students build lasting confidence in their music-making.

Beyond the Lesson

Mandy strives to cultivate a creative and connected musical community. Her studio offers a variety of opportunities beyond weekly lessons:

  • Performance Opportunities: Students participate in recitals, community outreach concerts at local senior centers, and piano ensemble projects with duet partners.
  • Creative Summer Curriculum: Students choose their summer projects, ranging from jazz and movie themes to Broadway tunes- allowing them to apply their earlong training in a playful and expressive way.
  • Family Field Trips: Each year, the studio attends concerts together to observe and learn from world-class performers.
  • Exam & Audition Prep: Mandy supports students preparing for RCM and ABRSM examinations, as well as competitive auditions and scholarships.

Mandy Chiu currently serves on the faculty at the Nueva School in Hillsborough, Pre-College Department San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and in her studio in San Francisco. She has previously taught at Crowden Music Center in Berkeley and the Community School of Music and Arts (CSMA) in Mountain View.
